Highlighting Our Veterans: Michael Carrico

A native of Washington, Indiana, Michael Carrico was the first in his family to enlist in the armed services. He was inspired to take advantage of the GI-Bill to go to college or develop a trade in the military.

He completed boot camp at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in San Diego and basic infantry training at Camp Pendleton. He then spent two years at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola for basic aviation airframe and hydraulics, before heading to MCAS Cherry Point to continue for eight more months on an AV-8B Harrier Jet as an O-level hydraulics mechanic. He stayed at MCAS Cherry Point, and went onto my squadron 2nd MAW VMA 223 for almost two more years as a O-level hydraulics mechanic on the Harrier Jet.

In total, Micahel served for five years, earning the rank of E-4 Corporal. Michael says he learned a lot in the military, including discipline and respect for himself and others.

Construction was a part of Michael’s family legacy. His grandfather was a crane operator and a heavy equipment operator. He says he always loved going to construction sites and watching him at work.

Michael started his career with Performance as a millwright and carry deck operator at Gibson Station. Over the course of six years, he’s worked his way up to his current position: crane operator, NCCER advanced rigger, and site trainer for all on-site equipment.

“I believe I've been shown a better way of leadership at Performance,” he says. “It stems from respect, discipline, consistency, and always setting a good example. I hope I can embody that for future employees.”

Michael believes some values learned in the military like attendance, punctuality, and respect carry over into his role at Performance. His advice to other Veterans or active-duty military who are considering starting a career at Performance: “There’s plenty of room for growth here. Join the team; you won't regret your decision.”

Today, Michael lives in Petersburg, Indiana. He loves spending time with his wife Terra and their kids Jayden and Jaycie. As a family, they enjoy year-round athletic events, going to concerts, and hanging out at Holiday World and Sky Zone.
