The 2024 SM Turnaround Project at Total Energies' facility in Carville, LA stands as a testament to Performance Contractors' ability to excel under unprecedented challenges. What began as a planned turnaround transformed into an emergency response when an unexpected superheater explosion forced an early shutdown, requiring rapid mobilization and strategic adaptation.
The $9.81 million project encompassed a comprehensive overhaul of the styrene monomer and EBIII facilities, with Performance self-performing 90% of the mechanical portion. The scope included the critical replacement of two reheaters within a three-reactor system, installation of a new superheater convection section, and various system upgrades throughout the facility.
The project's most notable technical achievement was the execution of large-diameter welds, ranging from 36 to 84 inches with thicknesses up to one inch. The welding scope alone amounted to an impressive 19,150 linear inches - nearly one-third of a mile in welded metal. When Total elevated the NDE grading criteria from "normal service" to "severe cyclic," the Performance team rose to the challenge, delivering exceptional weld quality under intensified scrutiny.
Despite the accelerated timeline and scope expansion, Performance demonstrated remarkable adaptability and technical prowess. Key accomplishments included:
The project's achievements in numbers:
Most importantly, despite the intense pressure of an emergency turnaround, summer heat challenges, and complex technical requirements, the project was completed with zero recordables. This achievement underscores Performance Contractors' unwavering commitment to safety and excellence in construction, proving that even under the most demanding circumstances, we truly do "Build Better."
