Performance Contractors recently finished building an entirely new ground-up facility as an addition to a large Gulf Coast refinery. This large-scale construction project contains 375,000 feet of pipe, with structures whose elevations range from underground to 300 feet in the air, and took 6.16 million man hours to complete.
This immense undertaking was the perfect project to leverage new technology to find cost and time efficiencies wherever possible, but all of this technology was only able to drive impactful change because of the Performance team leading the charge and making the most of it.
“I can say with very strong confidence that this project – being one of the largest we’ve had – is the most accurately tracked project completed in our company’s history,” said Darby Melius, Performance’s Corporate Field Solutions Manager.
Outfitted with well over 600 tablets, the technology was used in a variety of applications to streamline and detail every part of the job, and find efficiencies and simplicities while still adhering to safety and quality standards. Some of the applications of technology included:
- Field Progress Tracking
- Time Tracking
- 3D Models
- Augmented Reality (AR)
- 3D Cloud Point Scans
- Data Management
- Material Management
- Digital System Turnover
- Enhanced QC Workflows
Using AR and 3D models was crucial to our success and irreplaceable when it comes to the efficiency with which Performance was able to complete the job. The entire facility’s design drawings were able to be viewed on-site in AR via tablets, allowing the data and information for every single piece of material to be readily available at a moment’s notice. From top to bottom, this technology enhanced and streamlined processes and procedures for everyone involved in the project.
“It’s not just a feature for limited people, it’s actually a feature for everybody in the field,” said Matthew Santillan, General Foreman, Performance Contractors.
This project is an excellent example of what a good client-contractor partnership can bring to the table. Technology is a key part of how Performance has grown to become one of the premier industrial contractors in the country, and this project is an excellent example of how combining our expertise with a client’s willingness can produce incredible results.
